You know the face. The head tilt, the slow blink, the way they sit like they own the place. It’s the thing you love about them, and it’s the thing photographs never quite catch.

That’s what I draw: your furry (or feathered) friend, in a loose, lively style that makes people smile the moment they see it. I draw each portrait by hand in ink and watercolor.

I paint every portrait myself, the old-fashioned way: pen and paintbrush to paper. Every pen and brush stroke on the page is by my hand. Each portrait is done in my signature expressive, loose and energetic style.

What you receive is my artistic interpretation of your pet: their quirks, their posture, and their unique energy. Each portrait is one of a kind and is mailed to you.

How it works

  1. Order and check out. Payment is taken securely by Stripe.
  2. Send three to six photos. Daylight, at their eye level, close enough to see the eyes, with at least one full-body shot.
  3. Tell me a little about them. Vocal supervisor? Professional treat collector? This is what helps me capture their personality.
  4. I confirm within two days. If I need additional photos, I’ll let you know.
  5. I paint it. I’ll paint your pet’s portrait within two weeks of receiving your photos after checkout, then post it to you with tracking.

Good to know

  • Each portrait is painted once, straight onto paper. Watercolor has no undo button, so there are no revisions: what you’ll receive is my one-of-a-kind take on your pet.
  • One pet per 4×6 portrait, because 4×6 is about the size of a postcard. Want a painting with more than one pet? Email me at hello@studiolumiki.com and we can discuss a larger portrait so all of your pets have room to shine.
  • If you’re ordering in memory of a pet, please let me know and I’ll take extra care. I would be honored to paint them.
  • Painted with archival watercolors on heavyweight watercolor paper. Please keep your painting out of direct sunlight.
  • The painting is yours to frame, gift and show off. The copyright stays with me, so it’s for personal enjoyment, not for reproducing or selling.
  • I share finished paintings and work in progress in my portfolio and on social media, unless you ask me not to. Planning a surprise? Tell me, and I’ll wait until it’s been given. I’ll never share the photos you send me without your permission.

Order received

Thank you! I’m looking forward to painting your pet.

Now, the photos. Your receipt is on its way from Stripe.

  1. Email three to six photos to hello@studiolumiki.com. Put your pet’s name in the subject. Daylight, their eye level, at least one full-body shot.
  2. Add a sentence or two about them, and any markings I must get right, like a white sock or one green eye and one blue.
  3. Have a favorite pose in mind? Curled up, sitting tall, mid-zoomie? Tell me, and include a photo of it. Otherwise I’ll choose what suits them best.
  4. I’ll confirm within two days of receiving your photos that they’ll work. If I need more, I’ll let you know.

I’ll paint your portrait within two weeks of receiving your photos, then post it to you. I’ll email you tracking the day it ships.

About

Ink and watercolor sketch of a wide-eyed ginger Persian cat

Studio Lumiki is my illustration practice, based in California.

I work in gestural pen line, loose watercolor, marker and gouache, and on rare occasion digitally. I prefer to work analog: paintbrush to paper. Ink and watercolor are my favorite media because they have a mind of their own and bring spontaneity and energy to my paintings. My favorite subjects are animals and people caught mid-reaction or mid-thought.

My practice spans children’s books, book covers, surface and licensing, editorial illustration, and commissioned portraits. I take a limited number of projects at a time so each one gets proper attention.

Privacy

What I collect: your name, email address, and billing and shipping addresses when you order; the photos and details you send about your pet; and your email address if you join the Lumiki List.

How it’s used: only to make and ship your portrait, answer your questions, and send Lumiki List emails if you signed up. I never sell or rent your information.

Who else handles it: Stripe processes payments (I never see your full card number), Sender sends Lumiki List emails, and USPS and my shipping label service receive your address to deliver your order.
